Cayuga Memorial Arena Saturday, November 10

 

 The Haldimand River Cats Midget B team will be playing a special Remembrance Day hockey game in honour of all those who have served their country.

 

This event, to be held at the Cayuga memorial Arena November 10, will have a special guest who will drop the puck at the game's start.

 

Cayuga native Donald Kelly, a retired Warrant Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, will officially start the game between the River Cats and the Oakville Hornets.

 

"I am truly blessed each time I come back home", said Kelly about his return to the area. "The small town, close knit community was a wonderful place to grow up. From learning to skate with the figure skating club to playing hockey, refereeing or just attending the many games and events at the old Memorial Arena, one could say our family pretty much lived at the arena".

 

Kelly retired from 26 years of loyal and dedicated service, trained as a communicator research operator, served at several Canadian posts, sailed with the British Royal Navy in the Caribbean aboard the HMS Marborough, and over his career was deployed at Athena, Kabul, and Kandahar. He retired in March of 2017.

 

The upcoming hockey game is scheduled for 6:00 pm, and admission is free. The River Cats are part of the Lower Lakes Female Hockey Association in the 15-18 age group. The team will be wearing commemorative camo-style jerseys in honour of the event. The game will also support all Legions in the area - Cayuga, Caledonia, Dunnville, and Hagersville. Poppies will be on sale and a 50/50 draw will be held with proceeds donated to participating Legions.

 

Warrant Officer Kelly said he is looking forward to the game, adding he is honored to be taking part.

 

"I remember staring into the old display case at the end of the lobby and looking at all of the trophies and pictures and what it all represented," he noted.

 

"Coming back for this event, to me represents a new display case," he continued. "Another example of our community pride towards the sacrifices made by the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. On behalf of those men and women I would like to thank the Haldimand River Cats, the Oakville Hornets, the organizers and coaches for bringing this all together. I am honoured, humbled, and will remember this special event for years to come.
